There is no single best coding model in October 2026. The useful question is which current model matches the job in front of you.
The names below are the latest coding-relevant models in the October 2026 release timeline:
- GPT-6.1 Sol, released September 29, 2026
- Claude Opus 5.5, released September 22, 2026
- Gemini 3.8 Flash, released September 2, 2026
- DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash, released September 10, 2026. This is the current DeepSeek model. V4-Pro is the older August release.
- Grok-4.7, released September 21, 2026
- Llama 4 Maverick, released April 5, 2025
Llama is the outlier. Meta's list in this timeline has no 2026 model. Use it when you need an open-weight model you can run yourself, not because it is the newest name.
Pick by the job
| Job | Start here | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A long coding session with tools and computer use | GPT-6.1 Sol or Claude Opus 5.5 | Both are the current high-end models aimed at that work. |
| Fast edits, many small questions, lower cost | Gemini 3.8 Flash, DeepSeek-V4.1-Flash, GPT-6 Luna, or Claude Sonnet 5.5 | The Flash, Luna, and Sonnet lines are the speed and price tiers. |
| You want the weights, not a hosted chat | Llama 4 Maverick or DeepSeek's open V and R1 lines | Hosted GPT, Claude, Gemini, and Grok chats do not give you the weights. |
| A security review | Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber or Claude Mythos 5.1 | These are the specialist security models in the timeline, not the default chat models. |
| Daily JavaScript in a normal repo | Whichever of the six passes the same-task test | A release date does not tell you if the patch runs. |
How to read a model name
Pro, Opus, Sol, and Astra are the high-end names. Flash, Haiku, Mini, Nano, Luna, and Instant are the cheaper or faster names. A newer Flash can beat an older Pro on a small edit and still lose on a long migration.
Do not pay for the top model for every autocomplete. Use the cheaper model for boilerplate and the high-end model when a wrong edit is expensive.
What is already on this site
ChatGPT vs Claude for coding is the older two-model comparison. Keep it. Link it to this page instead of starting another "ChatGPT vs Claude" URL.
ChatGPT for coding is a workflow page. It is not a six-model ranking.
What not to trust yet
Any sentence that says "X is the best coder of 2026" without a task list is an ad. The task list for this site is Same coding tasks on six models. Until that table says "Not run" is gone, this page will not name a winner.
When the test is done, add one paragraph here: the winner, the score out of 12, and the task it lost. Then stop. Do not stretch that into a new URL.
